BIP Programme

This course is structured into several modules that cover the fundamental topics of good practices in doctoral supervision. Each module begins with a concise presentation of the key concepts to be addressed, followed by interactive group exercises and round-table discussions guided by experienced facilitators.

The goal is to create a transformative experience, fostering a “before and after” shift in participants’ understanding and awareness of their supervisory roles. To achieve this, the focus is placed less on theoretical content and more on a process rooted in practical, experiential learning.

Supervisors from diverse disciplines and varying levels of experience work together in a collaborative environment. This approach enables participants to develop personalized tools that streamline and systematize the supervision process. Collaboration is therefore central to the success of this training program, offering the additional benefit of peer interaction and creating a forum for dialogue about doctoral supervision as a professional practice—something rarely available.

The diversity of participants enhances the learning experience by revealing that, despite the differences in doctoral processes across countries or fields of study, the core challenges and issues faced by supervisors are often universal. While the supervisory role can sometimes feel solitary, these training activities provide a space for connection and mutual support, fostering networks that often extend well beyond the duration of the workshop.

It is important to note that these training activities are not designed to offer universal solutions or “magic formulas” for effective supervision. On the contrary, the aim is to empower participants to develop their own tools for systematic supervision, tailored to their specific needs and evolving in alignment with their personal and professional growth.
